## Verified facts

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove (Chikurin-no-michi / Sagano bamboo forest), Ukyo Ward, Kyoto 616-0000, Japan. Path at approximately 35.0167, 135.6711. Nearest station: JR Saga-Arashiyama (about 15 minutes and 240 yen from Kyoto Station on the Sagano Line), then a 10-minute walk. Also reachable by the Randen tram to Arashiyama and by Hankyu to Arashiyama on the south bank.

- The bamboo path is free. There is no gate, no ticket and no entrance fee, and it is open 24 hours
  a day, every day.
- The path is unlit after dark. Walking it at night is legal and possible, but you need your own
  light.
- The walk takes 10 to 15 minutes end to end. Most visitors spend 30 to 45 minutes in the grove area
  including photographs and Nonomiya Shrine.
- The quiet window is roughly 6:00 to 7:30 a.m. Crowds build from about 9 a.m. and stay heavy
  through the afternoon, thinning again after about 6 p.m.
- The surface is packed gravel and gently uphill, with no steps on the main stretch.
- Tenryu-ji temple garden, immediately beside the grove, charges 500 yen. Most paid guided tours
  include it.
- Iwatayama Monkey Park charges admission and sits 15 to 20 minutes of genuine uphill walking above
  its ticket office near Togetsukyo Bridge.
- Okochi Sanso is a separately ticketed garden villa at the top of the grove; admission includes
  tea.
- Guided tours on GetYourGuide start at about 31 US dollars for a short morning walk and run to
  about 150 dollars for the full day with the Sagano Romantic Train, the Hozugawa river boat and an
  onsen.
- The bamboo is evergreen, so the grove looks much the same all year. Cherry blossom is late March
  to mid-April and maple colour is mid to late November; both bring far larger crowds to Arashiyama
  as a whole.

## Do you need to pay for anything at all?

No, if all you want is the grove: turn up before 8 a.m. and walk it for nothing. Pay in three situations. First, if you want the temples and viewpoints beside the path, a bundled tour is usually cheaper than buying Tenryu-ji, the monkey park and Okochi Sanso separately. Second, if you want something you cannot buy at the door - the rickshaw lane, which is closed to people on foot, or a licensed guide who can tell you what you are looking at. Third, if you want the gorge: the Sagano Romantic Train and the Hozugawa boat are real rides with real seats that sell out in autumn.

## Corrections to claims found elsewhere

- "You need a ticket for the Arashiyama bamboo forest" - wrong. The path is free and ungated. Anyone
  selling grove entry is selling you something else, usually a temple admission or a guided walk.
- "The bamboo forest has opening hours" - wrong. There is nothing to open or close. The relevant
  constraint is crowds, not hours: before 8 a.m. it is quiet, after 9 a.m. it is not.
- "The grove is lit up at night" - wrong on ordinary nights. It is genuinely dark. Illumination
  happens only during specific seasonal events such as the December Hanatouro-style light-ups, which
  are announced separately and are not a permanent fixture.
- "Sagano bamboo forest and Arashiyama bamboo forest are different places" - they are the same
  grove. Sagano is the historic name of the district north of the river; Arashiyama is the name
  almost every tour and map now uses.
- "It is a huge forest you can spend a day in" - it is a few hundred metres of walkable path. Plan
  around it, not for it.
- Yen prices quoted in third-party articles go stale quickly; verify any figure close to your visit.
