Only one review — this is the cheapest guided option but essentially unproven. Frame it that way. Tenryū-ji admission (JPY 500) is NOT included.

The ghost tour (after dark)

$38 ghost tour (212 reviews): 2.5 hours from Saga-Arashiyama. Guided night walk of the bamboo forest (1 hour) plus Nonomiya Shrine. Includes one drink, a solo walk in the dark, and an "Anti Curse QR code." Arrive more than 5 minutes late and you cannot join. Do not visit the grove earlier the same day. No recording or live-streaming. 5.0 rating. Solo walk in the dark is what people remember.

Where the jump stops being worth it

The $31 walk has one review and is unproven. The $40 matcha tour is 629 reviews and a genuine choice. The $51 tour is the most-reviewed (939 reviews). After $96 (hidden temples), you are paying for train rides and restaurants rather than Arashiyama itself. The $150 onsen day is 5.0 stars and guide Itsuki makes it work, but you are paying for transport and onsen, not the grove. Pick based on what you actually want to do: walk, rickshaw, temples, or a full day out.

Honest note: what "tours from $31" means

The cheapest guided walk is $31. That is technically true. The cheapest tour is also ($17 kimono rental, not a guided walk). Most people book the $51. The rickshaw is $50. If you want to see the path for free, walk it yourself at 6 a.m. That is still the floor.
