Kyoto: Arashiyama Bamboo, Matcha, Monkeys & Temple Tour review

Matcha-monkeys review
Our verdict: the best all-in value on the site. Four hours, one guide, four sites, matcha sit-down, Monkey Park entry included. Only one catch: in summer, the guide may not climb the 20-minute hill to Iwatayama, making that leg self-guided. Rated 4.8 from 629 reviews, which is real volume.

What the tour covers

Meet at TULLY’S COFFEE Randen Arashiyama Station. Start with Tenryū-ji temple (30 min), walk through Arashiyama streets (20 min), bamboo grove (45 min), then a proper sit-down matcha drink (not a token taste), Nonomiya Shrine (15 min), and the Iwatayama Monkey Park uphill hike and entry (1 hour). Matcha and both temple and park tickets are included; you don’t pay twice at gates.

What works

  • One guide, four sites, one price—good value for $40
  • Matcha is a real sit-down, not a photo-stop token
  • Small group size lets you ask questions
  • Tickets included, so no separate queuing
  • Thunder, Min, Sai, and Peter are named by guides’ first names
  • Free cancellation

Worth knowing

  • Monkey Park climb is 15–20 minutes uphill with steps; summer sun is rough
  • In summer, the guide may not climb; the monkey-park hour becomes self-guided
  • Not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers (Tenryū-ji steps, gravel paths)
  • Four hours is full morning; not a half-hour item

Insider tip

Do this in spring (March–April) or autumn (November) for the best light and shortest wait at Tenryū-ji. If you visit in July or August, ask the guide in advance whether they plan to climb to the Monkey Park, or budget time for the path yourself. Wear shoes you can hike in—the park is uphill and the grovel paths need support.

Who it’s for

First-time Arashiyama visitors, families with children aged 8+, and anyone who wants temples, tea, and monkeys without picking between them. If you want only the bamboo grove, this packs too much. If you want the train and boat, see the $150 full-day option.

What guests say

Luca appreciated that the matcha was a genuine sit-down. Alec (US) noted the monkey climb was harder than expected. Andrew (UK) and Sharon praised the guide quality. Rosanna found the pacing good for a full morning. With 629 reviews at 4.8 stars, consistency is the draw.

Frequently asked questions

Is $40 worth it for this tour?

Yes. Four sites, one guide, matcha and entry included, and 629 reviews at 4.8 stars. For first-time visitors, it’s the best value on the site.

What if I can’t do the Monkey Park climb?

Ask when you book. The climb is 15–20 min uphill with steps. In summer the guide may not go; that hour becomes self-guided.

When should I book this tour?

Spring (late March to mid-April, cherry blossoms) and autumn (mid to late November, colour) are best light and most crowded. Winter is emptiest. Early morning slots (before 9 a.m.) beat the afternoon rush.

Is it suitable for children?

Ages 8+ yes. The Monkey Park hike has steps; younger children may struggle. All included admissions mean no surprise gate fees.

Do I need to book Tenryū-ji separately?

No. Entry is included. You don’t pay JPY 500 at the gate.
